I came across this experiment is an old handout from my teaching days, the little ladies thought it would be fun to try.

Gather:

clean sock
newspaper
long piece of yarn (about 5ft.)
2 TBS oil (canola, vegetable, etc)
1/2 cup water
food coloring (optional)
jar

Set up:

1. Add water to jar.
2. Add oil ***not exactly sure what the purpose of the oil is, it might keep the sock from drying out quickly.
3. Drop a few drops of food coloring into the oil. This is optional, it just makes the sock look pretty.

4. Take the clean sock and stuff it with newspaper, tie it closed with the yarn. It will look like a pull toy- you could add eyes and long ears to it and call it Fido if you want .

5. Take the sock for a walk in a field or woodland.

As you probably figured out, the point of the sock dragging along the ground is for little seeds to stick to it; well, the little ladies weren’t finding the seeds sticking on their socks, so Rainy started throwing it into the thistle patch hoping for seeds to stick.

She even got to the point where she was sprinkling seeds onto the sock. I think this experiment would have worked better if Dave hadn’t just mowed the path.

Grass and thistle seed collection picked along the way-

6. When your sock has gathered enough seeds, carefully place the sock into the jar of the water/oil mixture.

7. Set it in a sunny window and keep the sock moist. Don’t overdo it with the water, you just want the sock to be moist or it could get moldy. It might take a few weeks for the seeds to germinate, be patient and make sure the sock stays moist.

The warmth of summer is upon us and the herbs are very happy about that. I am always torn when the lavender is ready for harvest because it is always full of honeybees and bumblebees working so hard for the nectar. They just buzz at me in disgust as I chop, chop, chop away feeling guilty; but I always leave some behind for them.

We have been outdoors everyday, I find the heat and humidity to be a bit painful, but Fauna is finding creative and unique ways to stay cool- today a towel drenched in cold water did the trick.

We did a science experiment involving a sock and seeds. The specifics on that is to come.

Araina got out the permanent markers and dressed up my clothespins to make me smile while I hung the clothes to dry.

Fauna has been very busy making a new set of pet rocks.

Lots of foam painting going on too.

And the garden is blooming merrily. Here’s my bouquet for Friday’s Flowers- lavender, fairy roses, lime mint, and yarrow placed in an old shaving mug.

Have a great weekend!

“That’s all.”

Work in Progress

Lately, I’ve been lacking in creativity in the sewing department. I hadn’t sewn a single thing for about a month until yesterday when the creativity hit me- a happy little hedgehog named Hildegard. I was up until 2:30 last night working on her and thought I would share a little sneak peek of Hildegard tonight. Now, I took this photo this morning and she has changed a lot since then- she now also has ears and freckles. I love her, she’s my favorite critter so far! More to come on Hildegard later.

My Garden

Did a little weeding and planting today in our front garden. Here are some favorite things-

I have a thing for scented geraniums. I just love all the different varieties there are! This one below is an old fashioned rose scent, I like to add the leaves to sugar for a subtle rose taste. HA! I plan on making rose geranium jelly this summer as well!

Our front garden is starting to bloom- iris and catmint and a lot of buds on the fairy rose.

An old fashioned rose-

I have all kinds of different thymes growing in my garden. This one is new to me, it’s called Orange Spice, I bought it in Virginia last weekend. It will make a great tasting tea or a tangy kick to lemonade.

Now, to get outside and go frog hunting with the little ladies and then finish Hildegard.

“That’s all.”
