easy upside down glass jar terrarium

A long while back we made terrariums using charcoal, sand, and gravel; but at a recent unschool get together we made the most SIMPLE TERRARIUMS using upside down glass jars and-

the most basic of supplies:
-a glass jar with screw on or clamp on lid
-very small amount of potting soil
-moss and small plants that grow in moss (we gathered moss and Oxalis from under our oak tree)
-water

Easy to do-
-Place a small amount of potting soil on the lid of the jar, make it even with the top of the lid.
-Put the moss and small plants onto the soil, you can include some garden soil. There is no specific amount here, just make sure your green life has something to dig it’s roots into.

-Lightly water if the plants are dry.
-Carefully screw on the lid, the soil will work it’s way toward the center of the jar.
-Place in a window that gets a few hours of daily sun.
*Condensation will form and create a very pretty habitat that will last for months. I also love the look of the upside down jar.

Araina painted this cute little singing bird with her watercolor paints.

Then she made him come to life by using an old yellow sweater, felt and a needle.

Pretty good stitches I must say, especially with being only 7 years old.

I had to make one too, but mine is a baby rooster.

Araina has spent the weekend making “gifts” for the kitties in our family.
They loved the jingle toy made of a tp tube, jingle bells, paper, tape and yarn-

They loved the kitty dish made of bright red legos-

Charm was the only one that would put up with the cape-

He even chased the husky out of living room while wearing his “Super Charm” cape- he really looked the part!

Now, I’m afraid dressing him as a gnome was a little too much for Charm; talk about a twitching tail!

Oh, the humiliation!

Pixie (below), the other “inkspot” in our family, would take no part in the costumes; she ran and hid when she saw Araina coming her way with the green gnome hat! She is now encouraging Charm to contact a lawyer to sue for the posting of these pictures.
