This spicy doll is hanging off our bookshelf so the morning sun’s rays hit her, warm her up, and put off a wonderfully smelling aroma. I used my favorite seasonal spices for her- cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel.

You need:
small cinnamon broom ($.99 from Trader Joes)
cloves
dried citrus peel
cinnamon stick
muslin (about 7″x9″)
twine
wool or yarn
little bit of stuffing or wool

Steps:
1. Place the cloves, peel, and a the wool stuffing in the center of the muslin.
2. Place muslin around the top of the broom and tie tightly to form the neck.
3. Tie the cinnamon stick by making an x form with the twine.
4. Cut 2 very small holes in the head and place a clove in each for the eyes.
5. Draw a simple smile.
6. Glue on the wool or yarn for the hair and tie twine to make pigtails.

Then hang your cinnamon spice girl in a sunny spot to spice up the room.

craftin’ outlaws and new designs

I’ve been sewing like a crazy woman for the past week. I have a couple new designs and some old favorites:

elephants

inchworms

long-eared bats

fawns

piglets

I’ve been sewing to prepare for this fantastic show that my little ladies and I will be vending tomorrow (in Columbus, Ohio).

I will be closing my shop first thing in the morning to take all of my critters to Craftin’ Outlaws. If you’ve had your eye on a plush…..it may not make it back into the online shop on Sunday (5orangepotatoes.etsy.com).

homemade vegetable wash

Washing vegetables is more important than ever these days, even organic and local vegetables; here’s a vegetable wash to help kill those nasty germs on your nourishing food.

You need:
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
1 cup water

Put ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well to mix, spray vegetables, scrub, and rinse before eating.

easy pipecleaner and felt ghost

This little ghost is very simple and requires very little sewing. After you make one, it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to make another so you can have all kinds of little ghosties haunting your place!

For this wee little ghostie you need:
white embroidery floss (or thread) and needle
white felt
18mm wood bead
white pipe-cleaner
black pen
glue

Directions:
1. Cut the white felt into a circle that measures 4 1/4″ across; it does not have to be a perfect circle.
2. Bend the pipe-cleaner in half, make a “w” to form the legs, and then form the arms and neck. Bend the bottom of the legs to form feet.

3. Twist the neck and arms to secure the form. Put a lot of glue into the hole of the bead and stick the bead onto the neck.
4. Cover the wood bead with glue, find the center of the felt circle and cover the bead.

5. Pinch the felt on both sides of the head to make the typical ghost form, take the needle through both layers and stitch together. Stitch the front and back pieces by taking the needle through both layers from the side of the head following along the bottom of the bead.

6. Draw eyes and a mouth on your ghostie with the black pen, then place him in the window to scare away any ghouls or goblins.
