This spicy doll is hanging off our bookshelf so the morning sun’s rays hit her, warm her up, and put off a wonderfully smelling aroma. I used my favorite seasonal spices for her- cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel.

You need:
small cinnamon broom ($.99 from Trader Joes)
cloves
dried citrus peel
cinnamon stick
muslin (about 7″x9″)
twine
wool or yarn
little bit of stuffing or wool

Steps:
1. Place the cloves, peel, and a the wool stuffing in the center of the muslin.
2. Place muslin around the top of the broom and tie tightly to form the neck.
3. Tie the cinnamon stick by making an x form with the twine.
4. Cut 2 very small holes in the head and place a clove in each for the eyes.
5. Draw a simple smile.
6. Glue on the wool or yarn for the hair and tie twine to make pigtails.

Then hang your cinnamon spice girl in a sunny spot to spice up the room.

“That’s all,”

What you need:
gray felt
yellow felt
black cotton emb. floss
straight pins
scissors

dry herbs

wool or polyfill stuffing

dream pillow patterns

Step 1- Cutting out the moon shapes

You should have 3 pieces: 2 full moons and one crescent moon. Pin the crescent moon onto one of the gray circles. Leave the other gray circle as is, this will be your full moon piece.

Step 2: The detailing **Click on the orange links for “stitch how to”

I used the split stitch for the details in the moon. Split stitch the eye and craters on the crescent moon side of the pillow.

Now split stitch the eyes and craters on the full moon piece.

Whip stitch the crescent moon to it’s gray backing.

Step 3: Stitching the moons together

Put right sides together of both moons now. Blanket stitch or whip stitch the moons together, leaving a small opening for stuffing and the herbs. I did a blanket stitch here.

Step 4: Add dried herbs and filling. Stitch closed.

I like to add dried lavender buds or rosemary to their pillows because we grow it organically in our garden. Here’s a little list to work with, you can mix and match but make sure the odor is pleasant and not over bearing.

Herbs for the pillow-

angelica : prophetic dreams and visions
anise: use a little to repel nightmares
bay laurel: inspiration; repels negativity
cedar: repel bad dreams
cloves: retrieves buried memories; use sparingly
hops: restful sleep and healing
lavender: calming and helps to fall asleep
marjoram: relieves depression
mugwort: visions and prophetic dreams
mullein: repels bad dreams
rosemary: avoid nightmares and headaches; great for memory; use sparingly
st. johns wort: banishes spirits

***********************************

Here is a great gentle oatmeal mask for those of us that have sensitive skin. I guarantee this will leave your face feeling clean, soft, and smooth. Again, like the oatmeal and sunflower scrub, these items are most likely in your kitchen and the mask only takes a few minutes to whip up. The honey contains anti-microbial properties to cleanse and rejuvenate the skin, the oatmeal is to put moisture back and soften, and the egg tightens the pores for a smoother complexion. Put all the benefits of each together and you have a wonderful mask for the skin.

You need:
1 tablespoon runny honey (warm honey that runs easily)
1 egg yolk
4 tablespoons fine ground oatmeal
small bowl
towel

To make:
1. Add the egg yolk to the honey and mix with a fork until well blended.
2. Slowly stir in the oatmeal a little at a time to make a soft paste.
3. Use immediately.
4. Smooth the mask onto your skin using your fingertips in a circular motion- this is a little messy, make sure you have a towel close at hand.
5. Put your feet up for 15 minutes while the oatmeal, egg, and honey do their softening magic on your skin.
6. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Heather, from Shivaya Naturals, is doing a wonderful series called “We Deserve This;” reminding mamas to take the time for solitude and nurturing ourselves. I felt the need to contribute a recipe for this purpose and also provide a great recipe for relieving dry itchy skin with ingredients found in the kitchen cupboard- sunflowers, oatmeal, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vitamin E oil. The combination of oatmeal and the oil from ground-up sunflower seeds and vitamin E is a great way to relieve dry skin on these dehydrating winter days; the cinnamon and nutmeg are a little extra punch for circulation and aromatherapy to awaken the senses.

you need:
1/4 cup shelled, raw sunflower seeds
1/4 cup oatmeal
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vitamin E oil

to do:
1. Grind the seeds and the oats in a food processor or coffee grinder. Grind until you have a consistency of whole-wheat flour.
2. Add the spices and vitamin E; mix well.
3. Store in an airtight container until ready to use. This makes about 4 ounces, which is enough for one bath. Pour the mixture into a warm bath. If you don’t want particles to clean up following the bath, you can place this in a muslin/cotton sachet to float in the water.
4. I like to use this as a scrub too when taking showers. Scrub this onto your skin like you would a salt or sugar scrub; then rinse with warm water.

Take time for yourselves mamas and remember to breath.

Recipe altered a bit from Janice Cox’s Natural Beauty from the Garden.
