learning to unicycle

by 5 Orange Potatoes

Fauna has always been good at balance- she walked at 9 months, learned to 2 wheel in only a matter of minutes, the pogo stick was a piece of cake, and now her newest balance challenge- the unicycle.
She uses Darwin (our car) to help her get on the unicycle-

She pedals, finds her balance, gets in the correct posture-

Then lets go of Darwin and YIPEE! she does it!

Then down she goes, falling the “right” way thank goodness-

Only to try and try again! This kid doesn’t give up and will continue to keep at it until she is a pro!

Now to figure out a way to cushion that seat for her!

“That’s all,”

Well she gets my vote for the coolest girl ever! My husband Alex had a unicycle back before we had kids, we moved cross country but sadly the unicycle had to be left behind.
Her next balance challenge should be a castor board “rip stick”-type two wheel skateboards. The sensation is similar to surfing. our girls got them for Christmas and they are super fun, but weird to learn. alex and a i have been known to have late night indoor castor board sessions. Good times.

How old is Fauna? My son turns 8 in June and he carries his body way beyond his years. I’m wondering how tall one must be for a unicycle.

      She is 9. She’s about 4ft 6in.
She got the unicycle last year, but it was too big, but now it seems to fit her perfectly at the lowest setting.

This is so great! How lucky for her that she has the opportunity to learn to unicycle. So awesome.

That is so cool – Good luck with your practicing, Fauna. (Our puppy is called Flora – what a couple they’d bee :)
I showed this post to my youngest, since he just this morning announced he would like to learn to ride a unicycle. Fuel on a fire!

    Yippee!
And I love seeing people out in the world on strange bikes. :) (really, really huge ones, big trikes, unis, whatever.) So fun.

I learned to unicycle when I worked at COSI. I haven’t been on one in ten years. Fauna’s learning technique is dead on. Don’t pad her seat to much, it will impede her making a clean break from the uni when she falls. I got the seat stuck to my leg once and it sort of skipped down the inside of my thigh and left a very long bruise. It was one of many, many bruises ;)

I am much impressed! Way to go, Fauna! I can barely balance to, like, walk straight. ;) I wonder if practicing on a unicycle would help my kids overcome that genetic limitation…

You have GOT to be kidding me! Gooooo Fauna!!
