hummingbird nest- outdoor monday

2010 August 16
by 5 Orange Potatoes

The days of 90 degree temperatures have finally broke leaving a low to mid 80 day feeling so cool! We had a great day exploring our own yard today.

We stood under our HUGE Sycamore tree, looked up, and excitedly spotted this-

a perfect little hummingbird nest. I love the lichen shingled to the outside of the nest, and it had spiderweb silk as reinforcement to keep it in the nook of the branches.

Plant fiber and spiderweb silk made the inside of the nest all warm and snugly; no eggs though, I think it’s a little late in August for that.

My little butterfly catcher, she prefers to use her hands to catch them (thanks Kendra for the dress made from saris, Fauna LOVES it).

We have been seeing a lot of Buckeye butterflies on our peppermint flowers lately.

Eastern Black Swallowtail larva has been invading our fennel. Right now we have a total of 15 caterpillars, 3 chrysalises, and 5 teeny tiny eggs. I really hope we have enough fennel and Queen Anne’s Lace to feed them!

We are so happy to see our Pin Oak full of acorns this year. The last 2 years have not been good years for acorns. Our Black Walnut tree is full of walnut as well!

If you are participating in Outdoor Challenge Mondays, be sure your blog link is below; if you still want to participate let me know and I’ll add you to the list.

Hummingbird nests are so cool! That’s so neat that you found one. We just discovered pin oak trees recently on the sidewalk in front of our church. We love the acorns. They are neat trees! That’s great that your tree has a lot of acorns this year! :-)

Hey Lisa! I have been taking a blog break for a while (from my own and others’) and visited yours today to get the recipe for elderberry syrup. You and your girls look like you are still having the time of your lives! I think I will always come back to your blog for more recipes and plant/herbal lore no matter how long of a sebatical I take. Glad you are still blogging!

I’ve missed you Emily! I haven’t been blogging as much either this summer, I understand the need for a sebatical. I hope things are going well.

No way!!! I’ve only ever seen one other hummingbird nest. My grandfather found one on his property once. So cool! We have tons of hummingbirds and every chance I get we look for the nest, but have not found any yet!

    Lucky ducks!

We have so many hummingbirds on our farm but I’ve never seen them make a nest like this. Yesterday I did a post of bird homes. We had a little bird make a nest just outside our living room out of some wool we left out and the boys made bird houses from gourds.

and we have thousands of frangipani worms that eat all the leaves from our frangipani tree, they later turn into beautiful big brown moths.

Wow, I ‘ve never seen a hummingbirds nest. That’s so exciting. The weather has just broken today in Tennessee. It’s raining and 80 degrees which is better than 98 with a heat index of 105. It almost feels chilly. Love that sari dress. It’s just beautiful. Be well.

This is very sasd, but I just realized that I had no idea what a Hummingbird nest even looked like. Just showed the boys so that we could look for ones in the future. Fauna looks gorgeous, and it looks like some great outdoor time.

Oh! I was out for an evening run the other day when I stumbled upon a dead butterfly in the road. Of course I had to jog the rest of the way back with it cupped in my hand. Now I know its a buckeye butterfly!

  24. August 16, 2010
