camouflage game- outdoor challenge

2010 April 28
by 5 Orange Potatoes
Best played during a hike, but actually we play it in our yard all the time. We’ll be just walking around the yard together and I’ll just yell out “CAMOUFLAGE” to start the game.

To set up the game for playing the first time- ask what predator and prey mean. Have your children pick a local predator (for example a fox), then pick something it would eat for dinner (rabbit). What does the prey do to get away from a predator? They usually run and hide or simply stop and freeze.

 To play the game-

-Tell the children you are going to randomly yell out “camouflage” (check for poison ivy and stinging nettle if you are on a trail). Yell ”CAMOUFLAGE,”  then count to five, the children have five seconds to camouflage in with their environment or freeze.
-Open your eyes on five. Anyone you see moving is dinner.
-Anyone not moving is camouflaged and you do not see them- even if they are standing right in front of you. So, as long as they are not moving they are not seen. Call out anyone you see moving and tell everyone else good job and come on out.

Araina prefers to freeze in this pose rather than the run and hide strategy. She wins just about every time!

Outdoor Participant of the Day- Cheryl and her family, from Time to Craft, live in a 280 year old cottage in the SW of the UK. I love what she wrote in her profile, “We’d rather be searching for beetles than shopping for shoes.” I’m with you Cheryl! Here’s a pic of her little lion tamer taming the dent de lions-

She is tough to play games with, if she loses, the roof is blown off the house! LOTS of boo hoos and drama. ;)
