owl giveaway and 100 years old!

2010 February 12
by 5 Orange Potatoes

Tomorrow we are leaving for Virginia to celebrate 100. 100 years of age that is, my Great Aunt Curt turns 100 on Monday. She was born on February 15, 1910, can you imagine? Here she is in the 40′s, around 34 years old (this is the invitation done by my sister Katrina and her husband)-

Curt is 100

She loves geraniums, she still plants them every spring. I thought a geranium brooch would be a good gift for her.

hearts and geranium brooch

The little ladies and I spent a big part of the afternoon today making 100 paper birds to hang for the party.

100 birds

Valentines were also made for the family we will be seeing.

I just love the simplicity of this one-

As a celebration, in honor of Curt, I’m doing an owl softie giveaway. Oh, how I would love to give away 100 owls, but can’t quite do that!

Brown-eyed Girl and Gold Finger are already taken BUT……..

giveaway

I have sewn up a flock to finish (by hand) in Virginia. If you want one, not knowing which one you will be receiving mind you, leave a comment here, no matter where in the world you live. We return from Va.  late Tuesday so I will announce the winner sometime on Wednesday.

Be back Wednesday. Have a great weekend, happy Valentine’s Day, stay warm, and enjoy the snow, especially those of you who aren’t quite used to snow! Oh, and by the way to those of you who asked in my previous post, I get all my sweater scraps from my mom who makes bags and purses from thrifted sweaters. Lucky me!

Happy 100! What a lovely Valentines celebration. I turn 32 on Mothers day this year. I love when my birthday falls on holidays, this year my husband will be in Afghanistan still but our 4 kids have promised to celebrate with me in style. At any rate, your creations always inspire me. I actually save all of my kids out grown sweaters now and turn them into “forever pets”. Not nearly as neat as yours but who knows, I keep trying… BE BLESSED & safe in your travels..

Hello! So luverly to ‘meet’ you in blogland. I found you following my site. This is so auspicious. My sister handcrafted about 100 birds for my baby shower last year and yours reminded me of how beautiful they are! I now have them decorating my son’s room.

    But owls in particular are “his” bird (well, along with robins). So I’d love to put my name in the hat for sure and am so happy I happened upon your blog! Beauteous, joyful stuff! Happy Centennial to your wondrous Aunt! {nancy}

How exciting for you and your family to celebrate such a memorable birthday event. I reacall celebrating my Grandma’s BD when she turned one hundred years old. Mathilda Seibold 1900 – 2001 What fun owls you created!

  23. February 13, 2010

Wow – 100! The changes she has seen in her lifetime. My Great Gran lived to 103! She was the baby of one of the first Settlers in South Africa… imagine that… from ox-wagon to airplane! I will be thinking of her and give her a Namaste! on the day.
Oooh… your owls are gorgeous… I know a little boy who’d love one… with every bird sound his eyes get large and he says ‘shusssssh… Owl!’
Blessings and magic for a lovely journey.

I have just cried over this post, for so many reasons, they are, in no particular order: that I only linked through to leave you a message about having made fabric pom poms with my daughters and to ask you if you wanted a pic of our efforts (i’m still covered in minute bit of snipped fabric!), the thought of 100 – I cherish my last remaining Grandfather at 91, the thought of not knowing which lovingly sewn owl you would send, the fact that owls are my mum’s favourite animal and they often feature in our creative efforts, that my little girls fist solo literary effort (last week at 4 1/2!) was about an owl, and finally the fact that you open your offerings to the world when so often in the UK I am excluded from giveaways! I would like to add that I am crying in a good way, basking in the global blogging community, and hoping that you have a wonderful time with your Great Aunt. We alwasys make paper decorations for birthdays and the birds will look just beautiful!!

    Hugs and love, Jenni

Happy 100 to your Great Aunt Curt! Sweet giveaway, thanks for the opportunity.

  42. February 13, 2010

The owls are lovely. I have been eyeing them, wondering if I would be able to sew some for my daughter who loves owls. I hope you have a lovely time at the birthday party.

  43. February 13, 2010

I love your owl softies, and my kids would love to become the owner of one. Thanks for the chance! :) Safe travels.

  44. February 13, 2010

100! That is def. good reason to celebrate. The owls are cute. Take it easy and hope you have a good time in VA.

  45. February 13, 2010

These little owls are lovely – we love owls! More than that, what an amazing thing to be celebrating. My Nan passed away a few months ago, she was 96. I miss her each day, as I wish I asked her more and more and more about how things were. I remember many of the things she shared, but now that she is gone, I see in so many ways, how many of us are trying return to the pure and simple ways of the past, in cleaning, cooking, sewing etc. Find out all you can from your dear Aunt, she has so much to share from the past!

  46. February 13, 2010

What a wonderful thing to celebrate! My youngest would love an owl softie.

    Hello from Maldon in Essex.
I look after the outdoor learning for our country parks and I love your blog and even though my work is quite closely related I use some of your ideas with my own little lady, Harriet. We would very much like our own 5 orange potato owl. One our favourite books is Owl Babies. So if you have one that looks like a Sarah, Percy or Bill let us know. If too far to post a photo would be fine!
All the best Jo & Hattie

Would love a chance to win.

I love history! Your grandmother was beautiful. I love the flower in her hair. Can you believe we’re celebrating 100 too this year, but it’s our city that’s 100. Not quite as amazing as a person turning 100.
