our day
Started today by listening to Martin Luther King’s Freedom speech on our local public radio station; that speech brings me to honest to goodness tears everytime I hear it. The little ladies listened too; we talked about it, but I know it’s really hard for them to understand being so young still. Fauna seemed to understand more than ever though; I’m glad to see her growing in this way. Then the little ladies spent a lot of the day listening to Sweet Honey in the Rock, a tribute in their own little way.
The rest of my day was cooking like a mad woman- homemade breads, huge garden salad, and cooked apples. A bland diet is in order because we have been dealing with Fauna and her citrus allergy. This time of year she seems to overdo it with oranges by eating a lot of them. Citric overload for her means a very emotional little girl (cries over every little thing), itchy skin, phlegm buildup, sinus issues, and finally low grade fevers. Not a pretty thing at all. I tell her only one a day, but she sneaks them like an addict. She doesn’t really seem to understand that the foods we eat can cause harm to our systems; even the foods that are good for us. Now, however, after the difficulties of the last few days, I think she is starting to understand this a little more. So sad to hear her say, “Mommy, why do the foods you love the most cause you the most harm?” Then Dave yells in the background, “moderation is the key Fauna!” Time for a basic bland diet for her until she is free and clear of the many oranges that have abused her poor little body. HOPEFULLY, she will remember this next year when oranges are in season!
While I was cooking, Charm (top photo) and Pixie (bottom) were lounging and watching the birds at the bird feeder! Oh, the life of a cat!
Tomorrow my sewing machine is on the schedule. I’m starting to get a better understanding of this machine; it will help with the future softies I have doodled on paper right now.
Now signing off to work on a heart and pom pom garland for my Great Aunt’s 100th birthday party. Good evening/morning all!

Hi Lisa,
I’ve never heard of citrus allergies either. Poor little lady! What a beautiful sewing machine…..and she looks pretty tough. I have a singer that looks exactly like that, but mine is plastic. The metal version looks super!
take care,
love sara
poor fauna. legumes did something similar to me as a child. not fun.
and i wish we had heard MLKs speech. my daughter and i talked about it. i asked if she knew why she had no school and she did, although not the full meaning behind who MLK was. and you know, i am ok with that, because there is a part of me that knows she doesn’t have any of the negative -isms and i want to keep it that way.

I love those photos of your cats…very cute. The snowman picture is adorable as well. That’s too bad about the citrus allergy, but good that you have it figured out.
That kitty of yours looks so content! Poor Fauna, hope she is back to rights soon.
Poor Fauna!! I know how hard it is to watch your child suffer from food allergies. I had no idea that Princess’ eczema issues were allergy related because it started so suddenly. We have had AMAZING succes with NAET. You might want to check it out. It could help Fauna. Just a thought… (((((hugs))))) to Fauna!!
We listened to Sweet Honey in the Rock, too! I haven’t taught the girls about MLK yet–I can’t stand to, they’re still so young and fortunately racism isn’t something they’ve experienced. I just told them that we celebrate MLK because he was a very good man who wanted everyone to be friends–that’s basically right.
Charmie and that sewing machine are “sew” handsome…no pun intended
Poor Fauna. We have some nasty allergies/sensitivities here as well. Isaac doesn’t do well with tomatoes. His skin gets really itchy and his face gets so red it look like it’s been burned. He only eats tomatoes in the form of tomato sauce…and we have had him cleared for the sensitivity…but it still seems to affect him.
Gorgeous sewing machine…I so want to get a new one…um, but first I’d have to learn to sew.
We have a black cat too…Simon. Oh and does he ever have it made. To be a cat…
Tomatoes are a major struggle for her too. Any food that is highly acidic should be avoided in her diet.
Interesting. Maybe I should avoid all acidic stuff for Isaac for a while. He is usually SO mucusy and I can’t figure out why. He doesn’t eat much dairy…(a bit of cheese.)
Thanks for the food for thought. (wow…that was corny.)
This is the first time I hear about citrus allergy.
What a beautiful sewing machine!
A century old? Happy Birthday Great Aunt!
No, that Singer is actually new. I found a heavy duty, made of metal, simple machine and I LOVE it so far!
Man, those cats have the sweet life, don’t they? Too sweet.
Hope Fauna is better soon! Karen
I have a citrus allergy, too. I haven’t noticed (or just haven’t connected the dots) any emotional component, but oh, I do understand the itchy skin! I avoid eating or touching citrus completely, and it is very hard, being the citrus lover that I am.
I love the snow person! (And your daughter looks cute too!)
It’s heartwarming to read that you shared Dr. King’s speech with your girls. Your blog is so beautiful. I once heard that our bodies crave the food we’re allergic to, but I’m not sure if that’s true. Pixie and Charm are gorgeous.
OK, Lisa, this is crazy because my oldest is allergic to EVERY citrus fruit there is, and I have never had anyone who I knew before who had the same thing. Jacob was in the hospital 6 times with croup two years ago, and the doctors finally encouraged us to seek our very specific allergy testing to see what was going on. Jacob gets so emotional, and so run down when he eats it, and it is this time of year that affects him so badly. Botf of our kids also have celiac diesease, so we do the balnd diet about twice a month, just to give their guts a break.
I hope that you, and your little ones, have a wonderful week
Oh my! I had no idea Fauna suffered from a citrus allergy–I’ve never heard of such a thing. How very difficult it must be for someone who loves oranges so!
I love the photos of your beautiful kitties…so pretty!
I had *my* sewing machine running the other day…I made a pillowcase for one of Benjamin’s “baby” pillows. It was a ratty old pillow that I was planning to just throw away–it wasn’t particularly cute or anything. Well, he wouldn’t hear of it! Sooo, I used some of the fabric I had leftover (from when I covered the cushion on our cedar chest) and made a tiny pillowcase. I had a terrible time! I really must practice using the machine a bit more! LOL
I’m still in a bit of awe that earlier softies were not done on a machine? You are one talented lady:) Love the learning happening– from understanding the big stuff of the world to discovering that oh-so-important law of moderation:)
What a beautiful machine! I have a friend who is giving me her old sewing machine, and I can’t wait to settle in and learn how to use it! I may need to use you as tech support!
I’m just learning too. I don’t even know what all the symbols on my machine mean exactly. I have a feeling this will be a long learning process!
I’m loving those pictures of your cats, especially as we found out for sure yesterday that our middle son is allergic to them. And to dogs. Poor guy he loves animals!
Sensativities can get the best of you huh? It’s always a bother when they tinker with you emotionally…can be so tough for the littler ones. I can’t believe you guys still have snow!
I totally know what you mean about MLK – and so nice that you discussed it with your girls – Scout just wrote another essay on Freedom. I hope your little one recovers quickly!
Oh poor fauna! It’s so hard to want what you can’t have. Ugh!
Nice pics though…looks like you are enjoying your winter
Blessings~~
Love your photos – love that sewing machine!! So rare to see one that isn’t made out of plastic these days (I sew on my grandmother’s Signer from the 1960′s).
There is actually alot of evidence that people who are sensitive will actually crave those foods because their bodies don’t understand that the chemical reaction from eating them isn’t a good thing. I personally believe that’s why there are so many dairy and wheat addicts (2 highly sensitivity-causing foods) in our society. I’m sorry Fauna’s having citrus issues. I too love oranges so I would be broken hearted if symptoms like that appeared.
Uh, citrus allergy! Had no idea it can cause such symptoms. I wonder if there’s a homeopathic remedy for that. I know there is for pollen allergy and other allergies…
Love your Singer – looks heavy
Thanks for the music link, the kids are grooving around the lounge room as i type
Lisa – so many of the symptoms you list for Fauna plague Eliza much of the year, but just as I’m ready to delve deeper than the obvious culprits (sugar, pollen, dry winter air) she’ll clear up for a while…then back to it all again. How did you come to find that it was citrus?
