monsters and bean bags and uglies, oh my!

Monsters, bean bags, and Uglydolls have been very popular around here lately.

The photo of the bean bag below, designed by Araina and me, was meant to be a monster, but he looks more like a fish; stretch the imagination a little and perhaps he could pass as a sea serpent. Oh well, tomorrow we will be back to the drawing table creating more bean bag designs.

I knew about the popularity of Uglydolls, but didn’t know they had a series of books until I found them accidentally through Amazon (UGLYDOLL books ). They are hysterical and so imaginative, very kid friendly and match my girls’ sense of humor. Can’t help but love books that inspire a lot of oral reading, writing, creating, and designing by the little ladies.

ugly guide to the uglyverse

“Aha, but what does UGLY mean?
UGLY means celebrating
who you are in the inside and
showing us what you’ve got!” -The Ugly Guide to the Uglyverse

“The best thing about the Uglyverse is that it can be anything it’s inhabitants want it to be……It’s there because someone thought it up!
If you see something in the real world, it started as an idea in someone’s mind!
So when someone tells you ‘It’s just your imagination,’ you’re really on to something.” -The Ugly Guide to Being Alive and Staying That Way

An example of the inspiration- Fauna’s made up UGLY:

Name- Baby Boo Bah
Age- too young
favorite color- blue
hobby- sleep
dislike- noise
likes- 1. sleep 2. drink 3. eat 4. himself
*he does not know his mom or dad because he sleeps so much!

The next natural thing for Fauna to do now is to make Baby Boo Bah out of a thrifted sweater! LOVE how their interests guide their learning! It’s a good thing! ;)

I had no idea that the Ugly Dolls went beyond dolls! They’re so multifaceted!

We just made bean bags! Ours are no where near as creative as yours. The boys are trying to learn to juggle, so I thought bean bags might be the way to start (they started with oranges, and let me just say that is not the way to go).

Everything is so adorable, and looks like it was tons of fun

How very creative of her! Seeing Boo Bah come to life will be quite a treat! I love anything that inspires learning in children, but I especially love things like that book… What a great message!

Love how she plans out the personality before making the doll. :) Very thoughtful!

We’re really on the same page here! My son just discovered Ugly doll books and is loving them. I caved and bought him an Ugly doll this weekend, but my daughter wants to design her own. I’m excited to get started on it. I hope you show pictures of yours when you’re finished.

How great that she designed her own. My oldest, E, loves the Uglydolls. He has the first two books, two large and and two small Uglies. The other kids each have one or two but they aren’t half as interested as he is. He uses the cutest voices when he pretends they are talking.

Ya know the monsters Benjamin & I have, for when we’re separated due to chemo/surgery? They’re Ugly Dolls! I forget our monsters’ name…it has something to with the fact that it’s two-faced?!?

I love Baby Boo Bah–so, so cute!

I’m guessing you have Bop and Beep? We have one of those and around here, the names have to be known.

Boo boo bah reminds me of on e of my favorite yet in demise cartoons, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. He is wonderful and should make an amazing sweater.

I love that Fauna made her own UglyDoll. My kids are in an UglyDoll phase right now too. They have all the Uglyverse books and read them relentlessly. Finn has even gotten in on the action in the last week or so but calls them all Babo and gets annoyed when siblings correct him. I’m glad we’re not the only Ugly-obsessed house! ;)
