grandma’s homemade goodness

2010 January 4
by 5 Orange Potatoes

I want to share some more homemade goodies, this time all made by my mother-in-law. She has always made homemade gifts for Christmas; every year we get a new handmade Christmas decoration. This year, however, she made more than decorations;  just about every gift that was given to us was homemade. Here are a few of my favorites:

- The little ladies and I each received a corduroy apron. I LOVE these aprons, we have used them so much already! Oh, how I love the pattern with the orange and brown colors on mine shown here-

Cheryl's aprons

-She also made the little ladies each a flannel blanket. Araina was all cuddled up in hers today listening to free Storynory downloads. (Now that her room is clean and organized she doesn’t want to leave it).

-I love this corduroy bag with a big front pocket she made me. Temporarily it is full of colorful yarns, but I plan on it being my sewing bag that travels with me everywhere.

She also made us cute little snowman ornaments, a Santa, and snowman pillowcases for the little ladies. Thank you Grandma for the gifts. We love them and use them everyday!

When I first saw this post I loved the material of your apron and took a mental picture. This past week I found some at Joann’s and snagged some with a gift card and coupon, yeah! I plan to make an apron too. I also found some cute material for two aprons for my kids.

Araina looks so precious all cuddled up under her blanket and surrounded by handmade things! The land art you shared is so beautiful, both yours and Richards.

Beautiful creations – how lucky they are to have a grandmother that does handwork. My children have their great-grandmother that is still able to make an occasional afghan or rag doll. There is nothing more special than handmade.
    Warm wishes.

Lucky Duckies!! I love the patterns, and the colors…

I wish I was a better seamstress, oh how I wish. Maybe this year will be my year to really keep at it, and find my groove.

    Enjoy your gifts, how lovely…

So impressive! I love the flannel blanket and the cordorouy bag! So practical and useful, yet meaningful at the same time!

What great gifts! I love the aprons. So vibrant but will easily hide the scatterings of the cooking/crafting work.

I love that bag! I looked at some tote patterns but everything is small. I want to make something like that for my crochet projects. What do you suggest for a super-newbie-sewer?

  10. January 5, 2010

Just gorgeous stuff, the colors, the patterns…
BTW I have tagged you on my blog, hope you can play along.:)

There’s nothing like a home-made present is there? These are wonderful – those pinnies are especially gorgeous – more like items of lovely clothing rather than protective gear. Those blankets must be my favourite. Your little one looks so snug!

    Happy New Year xx

Wish that I’d thought of finding out, if my mother-in-law to be was a creative lady. It turned out she wasn’t. Lucky you :)
(my mother-in-law is actually a very sweet lady, and her cooking makes the angels sing – so I’m not complaining!)

You are so fortunate to have a creative mother-in-law! What absolutely gorgeous gifts!! Wow. I’m speechless (except, of course, for all the words I just typed).

By the way, I think I’m going to avoid Twitter for a while–it’s grating on my nerves again. So, if you reply to me & I don’t see it right away–that’s why. Of course, you can always touch base with me on FB! :)

Ooo…how lovely! I have seen those blanket before…I think you leave the seams exposed, then clip, and use the dryer or something to make them fluffy? :)

    Just beautiful!

Lisa, I dreamt about meeting you last night. The girls were much taller in my dream than I imagined them being and you lived close to me, like a few towns away. Hum.. does this mean something for our future?? You were really nice and down to earth, just like you seem here. I woke u p and was disappointed it was just a dream.

  34. January 4, 2010

Beautiful beautiful homemades! I must try one of those blankets and I have an apron in the making right here too….
What a busy and clever Grandma.

  35. January 4, 2010

Homemade gifts from grandmas are the best!!!

  36. January 4, 2010

Wow, everything looks so cute. Did she sew the blanket? It almost looks tied but I’ve never seen one made of flannel. I love the fabrics. :) Homemade gifts are the very best! I only wish our families would go for homemade, they are so much more meaningful. You are lucky ladies. :)

They are sewn, the edges were fringed in some way……I wouldn’t have a clue in how to make them.

I believe that after the sections are sewn with seam allowance facing up you cut them so that they will fray after use and washings.
