2010 so far
Starting out the new year has been a bit of a challenge so far……cleaning Araina’s room. This is no easy task, which I’m sure a lot of you mamas know already the complications of cleaning a 6yo’s room. We have spent quite a few afternoons in this abyss sorting, organizing, and donating. We were doing great today until the electricity went out (for only an hour, but it totally distracted us).
My favorite part of cleaning her room was finding these love letters…..makes the cleaning part not so bad!
(I love dosie, fauna, mommy, daddy, mimi, charming, pixie, ?, beansie, tt, etc….. the list continues on the other side)
Yesterday, I spent a few hours in the used bookstore. Spending nearly an hour in the sewing section I found this gem of a book-
I have always loved patchwork and the crazy quilt style. It’s so cheerful and there’s no need to focus on perfection. I’m picking up some new techniques from the book and making a simple hot pad holder right now. Hoping to make that quilt of sweater patches sometime soon.
Off now to spend the evening with my sisters watching the final episode of David Tennant as Doctor Who…..sigh.
I hope 2010 is going well so far for everybody!

Noooooooo! I only just started watching Dr. Who, and now I learn that David Tennant is leaving!? Well, maybe it’ll help that I ordered the earliest DW episodes from Netflix; if I watch them all, I may get used to seeing the Dr.’s face change . . . .
ha! I just decluttered a 6 year old’s bedroom too! bags and bags out the door to charity. it’s a great feeling (all that extra elbow room, I mean!)
i have always loved the idea of scrap quilting, but all quilting still scares me!
seems we all have the organization bug for new year’s. sweet love letters. what a treasure!

I like the idea of a quilt made out of the scrap felt pieces I have left over from projects. They’ve been piling up because I simply refuse to discard those wonderful scraps. I’m imagining how cozy that quilt is going to be.
I really have to get into the boy’s room to do a full cleaning and de0cluttering, and I am dreading it. I am hopeful that perhaps that I will find something sweet like your little one’s love letters, but honestly, I am not holding out much hope.
Happy New Year!
We have spent the last few days doing the exact thing minus the tv show. I have flet the overwhelming need to organize my whole house.
Those notes are the sweetest thing! My mom saved notes and cards I wrote that I like to look at again! I hope you save those.
your pot holder is looking good!
we did some cleaning and clearing here today, and the past few days. i’ve been on a mission! it feels so nice. and light.
Lisa,
Tell me, did you cry? I bawled. So said to see David Tennant go. I can’t even imagine DW without him. I’m sad just thinking about it. He is just so yummy. Oh, I’ll miss his acting too.
Love the letters. It’s so fun…all the things you uncover when de-cluttering.
Debbie, I couldn’t agree with you more. I get so sad thinking about it too! It was such a great final episode for both David Tennant and Russel T. Davies! Funny how attached you can get to character where change is so hard to accept!
Russel T. Davies did such an amazing job. I mean, his writing is always phenomenal but this finale was so brilliant. We watched the DW Confidential as well and he talked about how this regenerations was treated more like a death. It was more finale since he (and Julie Gardner) are also leaving as well as DT. I just love how he tied up all the lose ends from his reign. It was GREAT.
Happy New Year. I love this post; those love letters brought a tear to my eye, can’t explain exactly why, maybe because my five year old is starting to read and write and I can’t wait to see something like that laying about our house.

I love those love letters! I come across them in my girl’s room (8) and in my boy’s room (5). It’s such an interesting glimpse into what is important to them and what they are thinking about when they are alone. Thanks for sharing these!
Those little love letters are serious treasure aren’t they? Wow, you get pretty prompt Doctor Who over there – the last episode was only aired here a couple of days ago. Mr Tennant is ahem, rather popular!
Happy New Year and many thanks for your lovely comments in 2009. Emma x
I love that the book says “projects you can make in no time.” That is exactly how much time I have!

Once Upon A Parent
I can’t say that cleaning rooms is my favorite part of motherhood. Those notes are an awfully sweet find though.
I keep all my daughter’s little notes and scribbles. I love them so much.
Happy New Year.
Oh and trench coat…sigh
sigh…David…cream and red chucks…sigh…striped suits…crazy hair…sigh…
save those love notes:)….and that book looks fantastic, as does that little photo of the last project too! We’re in full clean out mode too– today is the school nook and I am dreading it (how does one space collect so much junk????)
I know just what you mean…I was cleaning my 9-year old boy’s room yesterday. It’s quite a task! Those notes are the best. I love coming across notes he’s written and little drawings he’s made that I hadn’t seen before. Happy 2010 to you!
Oh, the love of a 6 yo – such a sweet love note!!
I love those sweet love notes too! I have been tackling the scary basement and reading Simplicity Parenting. Hopefully we can get rid of some stuff and simplify. My new rule is to not let my house get so out of hand I can’t clean it up in 20 minutes. We will see how THAT goes!
We are cleaning and sorting also. Must be a New Year thing to do!
Looks like you may be having better luck than we are.
I resorted to sneaking things away when no one is looking. I am afraid I may be turned into the new hoarders show soon. LOL Good wishes for continued success.
wow! thats looks like a big job…. I guess I am in for that too in a few years, sigh….
I’ve never heard of crazy quilts. How cool!! It looks like, even with distractions, you are quite productive!
Yesterday my girls and I also spent the morning clearing out their bedroom, wow, we were able able to donate two huge bags of clothing and shoes. What a treasure find you have found in that quilting book. Wishing you a wonderful week…
Warmly
Linda
Come, now–you know good and well that the missing phrase is “I love doo doo.” Hee!
Willow and I were writing a letter to Grandma Bangle this afternoon, when Sydney, who’s three, happened by and noticed that we were doing something that didn’t include her yet. So Sydney dictated the following as her letter: “I love you, Grandma Bangle. I love all the grandmas and poppas, and also Julie and Ella, because they’re pretty.” And then she signed her name.
As far as I’m concerned, there should be nothing but crazy quilts in the world. I LOVE them. And the sweater quilt is a fabulous idea…my DH and moths go through more sweaters in a year than I can keep us in! Great upcycling project for the future!! Enjoy Dr. Who!
I seem to always start the new year with cleaning a 6 yr old’s room. We use phrases like, “Let’s give this to kids that don’t have any _______”. This year I enlisted my husband’s help – he is a huge fan of just tossing – no questions asked! I can’t wait to see the sweater quilt! Finding old books is soooooo much fun; my favorite event is the library book sale twice a year. Where else can you find an animal encyclopedia for 1.50?
We’re doing the same thing-minus the love letters.
I am afraid that i have turned my children into pack rats because I try to keep our house so clutter free…or maybe it’s just girls..or kids in general. My 9 yr old’s shelves in her room are crammed with everything from twist ties from the grocery store to pieces of plastic bags, corks, feathers, little scribbled notes, to a strand of popcorn and cranberries…and the list could go on and on…coat pockets are fun to empty too…you never know what you’ll find!
We spent a good part of yesterday cleaning my daughters bedroom too. Focus is definetely the key!
Those love letters are so sweet and would be going in the keep pile for me
Oh, that doll is so pretty. I bet you are uncovering so many “lost” treasures. Good luck cleaning it all out — and then cross your fingers it lasts for more than a week.
Hubby downloaded the last episode of DT on Doctor Who last night so we can watch (no cable/dish — but there are these sweet British people who put it up on youtube — shhhhh). I’m almost dreading it. Maybe if I put if off he won’t really be gone.
I didn’t know you were a crazy quilter! What fun!
Happy New Year, and good luck with that room!
i also have a 6 year old and we spent 2 days organizing and cleaning her room! i do love the new year that, for me, is like spring cleaning! once i start putting away christmas stuff other things get cleaned too…..it’s refreshing! LOVE the sweater patch work quilt idea!!! show us your progress and have fun!!!
I will miss David Tennant too! Such a great Who. I still have a toy box to sort out, a vast collection of matchbox cars that have clogged the interstate to the toy corner! Oh well, with all the snow we are getting I think I’ll get the chance to stay home and work on them.
