work(s) in progress- sewing, writing, and a game

Everything seems to be a “work in progress” around here lately. Here is what we have been up to:

I’ve come up with a simple owl pocket pal. He still needs some wings stitched on, but that doesn’t stop the little ladies from claiming him (no wonder I’m not able to get up that Etsy shop).

The little ladies and I are also working on a game which uses pressed leaves. So our table is covered in beautiful fall leaves right now.

Calvin and Hobbes are a big hit around here lately. Blogger friend Tara, Periwinkles and Pine, posts some of the cutest Calvin quotes on her blog that I had to pick up a couple of the books from the library. The girls are loving them and are now inspired to write some comics of their own!

As I was about to hit the post button Araina ran in with her first comic finished! The first line is, “Hey, I a fish singing my ABC’s.” I love it!

Finally,  here’s a “no longer work in progress” project; Fauna finished her first sewing project in her sewing class- this cute blue drawstring bag! She is very proud! Boy, can that girl sew a straight seam!

Enter your funny owl wings and let it fly ;)
How nice that your daughter has sewing class! She has talent!
A game with leaves? I’m curious.

      Have a wonderful weekend!

There is rarely a time when Calvin and Hobbes are not just what the doctor ordered! My dad has the collected works in hardcover and I love pouring through them. My favourites were always the dad for reelection type ones or the transmogrifier type ones. And of course who doesn’t love G.R.O.S.S.?

My little ones have just started to enjoy comic books, and I adore the drawing that your daughter made of her own. So sweet

What a sweet post. I love everything about it!

      Hi Lisa~
There’s so much I can relate to in this post! My boys love to take my unfinished projects & claim them… lots of autumn nature games around here mostly with rosehips & milkweed pods…Comic book craziness hit us about a year ago, and my older boys want to start their own company (AJ comics instead of DC :-) … and the sweetest reminder of my little blue ditty bag that I sewed in Girl Scouts and recently found in an old box (I think we used the same pattern:-)

      Have a great day!

Love finding old girl scout projects from a time long ago……my mom still has some christmas wreaths I made in girl scouts. I laugh every year she places them in their special spot. They are horrid by the way, one green wreath is made of some sort of scary green fuzz!

        Rosehips and milkweed pods….love it!

I am so glad I found this site! My Baby is an adult and I have a grandcat now. But I sew and craft for all my extended family.(nieces and nephews, son and beautiful daughter in law, SO, brothers and sisters in laws and Mom)

I noticed the n between the Y and the Z. I thought maybe it was because the song is sung “Y and Z” and she had thought it was “Y n Z.” Keep working on your projects! They look great!

    11. 2009 November 13

huge “calvin & hobbes” family here!

i just had to leave a post about your owl. he is just adorable :-)

    12. 2009 November 13

Aren’t Calvin and Hobbes just the best? Thanks for the mention ~ I’ll have to grab some of our C&H books for Owen and see if they make him feel any better – the dreaded flu has come to call! :(

Your craft projects looks amazing as always :)

    13. 2009 November 13

As a great fan of Calvin and Hobbes I can say your illustration of this interest for them is perfect !!! I think “work in progress” can be a good way of life ;) too !

    14. 2009 November 13

I just love reading about how you encourage your girls to be creative. The comic and drawstring bag are wonderful. Love your photos.

    15. 2009 November 13

Wow that owl is so cute! And that comic…..on my gosh that’s fantastic as is the bag! You are such a creative family!! Beautiful!

    16. 2009 November 13

Love everything – the cute owl, the comic, the bag. Talented bunch of ladies! :)

    17. 2009 November 13

That bag rocks! And the comic is just too precious. :)

    18. 2009 November 12

The bag is wonderful! And what a darling comic :-)

I’d love to know what game you played with the leaves.

We love Calvin & Hobbes – although I’m sure it’s a comic for adults!

First of all GREAT JOB Fauna on the bag…I expect one for christmas!!!
Second, Erik am still laughing from the fish comic!!! Too cute!!!

      • 2009 November 13

Robin, did you check out her alphabet? It’s so cute because she has 2 w’s, missing an n, then placed an n b/t the y and z!

    20. 2009 November 12

Way to go Fauna! Our house too is full of works in progress.

    21. 2009 November 12

I’m laughing about the Etsy shop comment. I set up a shop on there with the intention of being able to whip up some fast creations….I have the same issue. Someone wants it or a birthday has appeared….holidays are around the corner. Yup. Can’t craft fast enough, but maybe that would take the enjoyment out of it. Hmmm….to be a super speedy crafter.

      • 2009 November 12

Yep, I know what you mean, I am so not the type to assembly line creations. I also get bored a little fast and must move on to a new design after the second one. I’ll just keep creating and hopefully one day I will be able to put up that shop!

I have such a love-hate relationship with Calvin and Hobbes. My oldest (now seven) learned to read through C&H. This is great, right? Except that he wants to emulate Calvin – in the worst ways possible (I no longer wonder why his mother always looks so stressed out). He even demanded that he be Calvin (and Stupendous Man) for Halloween. I had to paint stripes on a red shirt and everything. He was adorable – except for the attitude.

It doesn’t help that the author lived in the same town where my husband grew up – so his mother has sent a bunch of C&H books to our little Elf.

The owl is super cute. I’m so impressed by Fauna — way to go! And my boys are crazy in love with Calvin and Hobbes. Just be careful when they go to take a bath — my 8 year old wanted to flood the tub and have the water run down the stairs because Calvin did it.

    24. 2009 November 12

what a cute little owl- is it from repurposed sweaters? brilliant!

found you via Jane (corner view)

      Cheers,
      Vanessa~

      • 2009 November 12

It sure is from a repurposed sweater, actually it’s even the inside of the sweater. I love the little thread knots, gives the owl a fun look!

        • 2009 November 13

I thought the thread knots were a design element – I noticed them right away and thought “She’s brilliant!” lol The sentiment still stands, by the way – I love how you can use repurposed items to such advantage.

I got some Calvin comics for Hannah at the library but never got around to reading them to her because … well, who knows. I should try again.

Your daughter’s comic strip was beyond sweet. I would be smiling all day with something like that. :)

    25. 2009 November 12

Cute owl! Fauna did a fantastic job on her drawstring bag! I remember our comic phase fondly. :)

    26. 2009 November 12

My oldest learned to read via Calvin and Hobbes — and he still loves and reads the collection of those comics he has amassed over the years. You can get some fun free blank comic templates on donnayoung.org (just type comic template in the search area). My boys both still love writing comics– Max’s are mostly about his little sister getting in trouble, and Noah is now writing a joint comic (via a hardcover from Blank Books– love that site!) with his best friend who moved to Alaska.

And oh, that owl. I need to go back to my blog quick and link your get well gremlins tutorial– I’m totally smitten with these creatures of yours! PS– way to go Fauna– that bag is SO cool:)

      • 2009 November 12

Thanks so much for the link Kate, it sounds like something we could really use right now! How fun to be writing a comic with a friend that is far away.

    27. 2009 November 12

Great job, Fauna on sewing that bag! And what an adorable comic from Rainy. Sounds like you have a lot of very full days, Lisa. oh, Congrats on being on the nominated for the unschooling award. You do an awesome job with the little ladies!

    28. 2009 November 12

OK, I might have to make one of those owls too! And what a great bag that Fauna made. I will take a sewing class one of these days…maybe I will wait until Magnolia is a bit older and we can take a sewing class together…that would be cool!
