kitchen witch cookie jar by the r.j. drinkwater co. (1980)
I received this wonderful kitchen witch cookie jar from my grandparents many years ago. I love her as much today as when I first saw her. Granny thought she was the ugliest thing she had ever seen, but she purchased her for my birthday anyway! She is on my counter year round, not just for the month of October, she has way too much character to stash away! However, I thought it was only appropriate to show her off this time of year. We will be making pumpkin cookies this week to stuff her belly!
Old Witch, Old Witch by Burl Ives
Chicken my chicken my creamy crow,
I went to the well to wash my toe,
When I got there, the water was low,
What time is it, Old Witch, Old Witch?
What time is it Old Witch?
Old Witch, Old Witch, she lives in a ditch,
And combs her hair with a hickory switch.
She lives on nails and snails and flies,
And if you go near she’ll wobble her eyes,
Oh, she’ll wobble her eyes, Oh, she’ll wobble her eyes.
Chicken, my chicken my creamy cran,
I went to the well to wash my hand,
When I got there the water was sand,
What time is it Old Witch, Old Witch?
What time is it Old Witch?
Old Witch, Old Witch, she lives in a ditch,
And combs her hair with a hickory switch.
She’s fat as a feather but tight in the middle
And when she laughs she sounds like a fiddle.
Oh, she sounds like a fiddle! Oh, she sounds like a fiddle!
Chicken, my chicken, my creamy crase,
I went to the well to wash my face,
But, when I got there the water was lace,
What time is it, Old Witch, Old Witch?
What time is it Old Witch?
Old Witch, Old Witch, she lives in a ditch,
And combs her hair with a hickory switch.
She sleeps on a bed with straw and corn
And when she snores she sounds like a horn,
Oh, she sounds like a horn! Oh, she sounds like a horn!
Chicken my chicken my creamy cregs,
I went to the well to wash my legs,
And when I got there the water was dregs,
What time is it, Old Witch, Old Witch?
What time is it Old Witch?
Old Witch, Old Witch, she lives in a ditch,
And combs her hair with a hickory switch.
And as I said she’s very fat,
And when she walks she jumps like a cat,
Oh, she jumps like a cat! Oh, she jumps like a cat!

Oh! Isn’t she wonderful? I love her…and love that you are going to stuff her belly!!
I believe they are supposed to be lucky…am I right? Have you heard that before. I will have to ask my mom but I am pretty sure back in the day they made things like this to hang or display in a kitchen and there was poem to go with them about their luck!
Christie, yes, they are supposed to be lucky and prevent burning food…..hasn’t exactly worked in my kitchen though.
The “poem” is actually song lyrics from an old Burl Ives song. I highly recommend it. I couldn’t find a direct link to play the old song though. I have it downloaded from I tunes.
When I first saw her, she looked quite scary but when iI read the whole post, all changed. Great gift from grandparents and would be lovely to open the jar and find a pumpkin biscuit inside.
I LOVE her!!! She is so pretty, in a not so pretty way. Love her love her!
The poem is great also, I am going to save it and try to work it into our Halloween day. Thanks for sharing!
That’s a fabulous jar! Love it.
Oh I think she’s just lovely!
Oh! Pumpkin cookies…maybe I will come over to your house on Thursday to work on my blog
What is the name of the witchy character she looks like?
Love the witches and the poem! I’ll have to do this one with Michael. He loves all things scary!
Hi Lisa!
Thanks for leaving such a nice comment on my blog. I love that witch kitchen cookie jar! She certainly does have character. The funny thing is, I can totally see that on my grandmother’s kitchen counter. It just looks like something she would have had.
Have a great day!

lisa…about your comment on my blog today about herbal remedies for eczema….i would love to know more. i know it has been vastly improved since i stopped using anything with lanolin in it. i am clearly allergic to that. i have heard borage is very good. honey on my skin and consuming local honey, as well. omega-3s in general. i love olive oil as a moisturizer and natural soaps are better. (my kids have done best with goat’s milk soap in the diapering regions.) does that all sound about right to you? you are so sweet to be interested on my behalf!

She is awesome.
She is horrible/wonderful!
She is beautiful:)
She is ugly, but in a colorful, lovable way.
She’s great! I see a little twinkle of mischief in her eyes
Reminds me of Strega Nona. Love it.
I think she’s cute!
That’s an awesome old Witch! Very Baba Yaga-like. Have fun making cookies and preparing for Halloween!

Whoa! That is one ugly witch. She looks like my oldest brother in drag after getting plastered the night before, or at least what I’d imagine he would look like in said situation.
Oh my word… what a delightful poem. The words are so wonderfully chosen… they gurgle!
Thanks for sharing,
Blessings and magic.
part of me is amused by it, and the other part is creeped out :p
So awesome! I’m jealous!
