Love Note from a Fairy

2009 April 1
by 5 Orange Potatoes

Araina came to me this morning and said, “Mommy, I found a fairy note for you.” This is what she had found………………

A little later I caught “the fairy” writing on Osage Orange tree roots…………………..

Osage Orange trees grow on the edge of a little woodland and farmland in the back of our property. They were planted there many years ago as a natural fence to keep cattle on the farmer’s land. Some of the roots had been plowed over for a future crop of corn or soybeans, so we brought some home to play with.

The roots flake apart like little sheets of paper, the girls have coined it “fairy paper.”

Oh, and in case you were wondering what I caught the fairy writing……………………….

I Love Dabby.

I love the fairy notes! Osage Orange makes a beautiful, natural dye. Perhaps the extra bits could be saved up to dye a beautiful play silk….

The notes are so sweet! Osage is on my “to plant list”. The oranges are supposed to keep away spiders, which I prefer *outside* the house.

I love that. I used to write on birch bark when I was a kid– I thought it was so story-bookish.

The decorating wax was also at A Toy Garden. It was kind of expensive, so I only brought out half for them to use. I saved the other half for another day.

aw, how cute. I have never heard of Osage trees but have seen trees that have thin sheets which could be used for “fairy” writing. That is sweet.
